What Happens When an Empire Takes Everything? Resistance in The Fall of Wolfsbane

In The Fall of Wolfsbane, Ragnar and Maja Wolfsbane face cultural erasure under an empire determined to reshape them. Discover how this epic fantasy novel explores identity, resistance, and survival when everything familiar is lost.

One of the central themes in The Fall of Wolfsbane is the question of identity.

What happens when everything that defines you — your home, your language, your customs — is taken away?

Who do you become when your world is conquered?

This is the struggle that shapes both Ragnar and Maja Wolfsbane in The Fall of Wolfsbane.

Their story is about more than war. It is about survival in a world designed to erase them.

Empire Always Demands More Than Land

When I created the Ostreich Empire, I wanted it to reflect a truth found in history.

Empires do not only conquer land. They conquer culture. They rename cities. They rewrite history. They teach the conquered that their way is the only way.

This is the process of cultural assimilation.

It is not always done with swords and soldiers. Often, it is done with schools, religion, and ceremony. It is done with laws and language. It is done slowly—until people forget what they lost.

Ragnar Wolfsbane: Adaptation Without Surrender

Ragnar’s story is shaped by this pressure to assimilate.

As a hostage in the Empire, he is forced to learn their ways. He must speak their language. He must fight with their weapons. He must survive within their rules. But Ragnar never fully becomes one of them.

He learns to adapt without surrendering who he is. He keeps his father’s name. He remembers the songs and stories of his people. Even when he earns a title in the Empire, he carries his past like a hidden blade.

For Ragnar, survival does not mean forgetting.

It means waiting. It means learning. It means biding his time.

Maja Wolfsbane: Resistance Through Identity

Maja faces a different challenge. She is taken to the Empire’s capital as a living trophy.

Her captors want to civilise her — to cut her hair, change her clothes, and teach her how to walk, speak, and dance like them.

But Maja resists in every way she can. She learns their lessons, but only to use them against them. She speaks their words, but dreams in her own tongue. She is clever enough to survive their court, but never lets herself become what they want her to be.

Maja’s resistance is quiet.

It is the resistance of memory. It is the refusal to forget who you are, no matter how isolated or powerless you feel.

For Maja, identity is a weapon. It keeps her alive. It keeps her strong.

Cultural Erasure in Fantasy Reflects Real History

I believe fantasy is at its most powerful when it reflects the struggles of the real world.

Throughout history, countless cultures have faced erasure at the hands of empire.

Languages have been banned. Traditions have been outlawed. Stories have been lost.

But there is always resistance. There are always people who remember. There are always voices that survive.

In The Fall of Wolfsbane, this is the heart of the story.

Ragnar and Maja are not just fighting for their lives. They are fighting for their culture. For their names. For their future.

Who Are You When You Lose Everything?

That is the question I want readers to carry with them. Who are you when your home is taken? When your language is forbidden? When your stories are silenced?

For Ragnar and Maja, the answer is simple. You survive. You remember. You resist.

Even in the heart of the Empire, they carry the spirit of Meerand.

They are Wolfsbanes. And that will never be forgotten.

🐉 Draft Complete! Launches Incoming & Staying Focused | Author Diary – March 21, 2025 📚✨

This week, I finished Dragon Squadron and shift focus to prepping three upcoming book launches: Wyvern’s Shadow, Forged in Blood, and Blade of Sorrows. Time to wrap up open projects!

This week, I wrapped up the draft of Dragon Squadron (RAF Dragon Corps), and I’m thrilled with how it’s turned out.

But with three book launches on the horizon—Wyvern’s Shadow (The Ravenglass Throne: Part Two), Forged in Blood, and Blade of Sorrows—my focus now shifts to prepping those releases.

In this episode, I reflect on the many open projects I’ve got on the go and the importance of staying focused rather than jumping into something new (no matter how tempting!).

It’s time to clear the decks before taking on the next big adventure.

🏰 The Ravenglass Throne is Complete! What’s Next? | Author Diary – February 21, 2025 📚✨

I’ve finished *The Ravenglass Throne* series! With all 12 books complete, I’m reflecting on what’s next and taking stock of my open projects. I also discuss *The Fourth Turning is Here* and how shifting societal trends impact storytelling. #FantasyWriting

This week marks a major milestone—I’ve finished book 12 of The Ravenglass Throne, meaning the entire series is now complete!

Now, it’s a waiting game for the edits to come back, but the hard work of drafting is done.

With The Ravenglass Throne wrapped up, I’ve been reflecting on what’s next.

I need to take stock of my open projects and decide which one excites me the most before diving in.

There are plenty of ideas pulling at my attention, so it’s all about choosing the right one.

I also discuss The Fourth Turning is Here, a thought-provoking book that explores generational cycles and societal shifts.

It’s made me think about how we’re in the midst of a zeitgeist shift, and what that means for the stories people will connect with most in the years ahead.

Exciting times ahead—both in my writing and in the changing landscape of storytelling!

Magic, Strategy, and War in The Ravenglass Throne

Discover the intricate politics, military strategy, and wyvern-powered warfare of The Ravenglass Throne. Explore how power, betrayal, and leadership shape the fate of Ostreich in this epic fantasy series.

A kingdom isn’t just built on steel and magic. It thrives—or falls—on the relationships that bind it together.

In The Ravenglass Throne, this plays out through military might, political intrigue, and the mystical bonds that shape the future of Ostreich.

The Ravenglass Network: Strength and Fragility

At the centre of Ostreich’s power lies the ravenglass network.

This isn’t just a tool of war—it’s a lifeline.

The connection between wyvern and rider is more than strategic; it’s a symbol of trust, unity, and the delicate balance that keeps the kingdom standing.

But when corruption seeps in, those unbreakable bonds become fragile.

Even the strongest power structures can crumble if the foundation is compromised.

Wyvern Riders: More Than Warriors

Ostreich’s military isn’t just about force—it’s about precision, coordination, and trust.

Commander Irmin’s aerial squadrons function as tight-knit communities, where loyalty is just as important as skill.

Each wyvern rider must balance individual prowess with perfect synchronisation, just as the noble houses must navigate their own ambitions while maintaining the kingdom’s stability.

One misstep in battle, one fractured alliance in court, and the entire structure is at risk.

Political Intrigue: A Kingdom at War With Itself

Politics in Ostreich is as dangerous as any battlefield.

Noble houses like Darius and Gerlach each push their own vision for the kingdom’s future, their manoeuvres shaping events just as much as war does.

At the heart of it all are the three royal sisters—warrior, diplomat, scholar—each representing a different path to leadership.

Their journey from division to unity mirrors the greater struggle to hold a fractured kingdom together.

The Illusion of Power

Ostreich appears strong. But true strength isn’t just about wyverns in the skies or armies at the borders.

The ravenglass network, for all its might, is vulnerable to corruption.

Military supremacy can’t prevent betrayal.

Political alliances shift under pressure, revealing that security isn’t about a single source of power, but about maintaining balance across all of them.

It’s a lesson the kingdom—and its rulers—must learn before it’s too late.

The Threat Beyond the Borders

Ostreich doesn’t exist in isolation.

Molotok looms as a constant external pressure, forcing the kingdom’s leaders to walk a fine line between defence and diplomacy.

Too much military readiness, and they risk provoking war.

Too little, and they invite invasion.

This external tension bleeds into internal struggles, forcing Ostreich’s rulers into a high-stakes game of strategy where a single miscalculation could mean disaster.

A Fantasy Kingdom That Feels Real

The world of The Ravenglass Throne isn’t just about magic and war.

It’s about power—how it’s won, how it’s wielded, and how easily it can slip through grasping fingers.

The integration of wyvern bonds into military and political strategy creates a world that feels both fantastical and grounded.

It’s a kingdom where magic and politics are inseparable, where alliances are just as vital as weapons, and where survival depends on understanding that no power—military, political, or mystical—stands alone.

The Battle for Ostreich

The Ravenglass Throne isn’t just a story about war.

It’s a story about leadership, trust, and the delicate threads that hold a kingdom together.

The strongest rulers aren’t the ones who wield the most power.

They’re the ones who know how to balance it.

And in Ostreich, that balance is more precarious than ever.

🏰 Finishing The Ravenglass Throne Book 10 & What’s Next | Author Diary – February 7, 2025 📚✨

This week, I’ve finished drafting Book 10 of The Ravenglass Throne and even started on the first chapter of Book 11!

With the series nearing its conclusion, I’ve also been working through edits on Book 2, which I’ll start posting on Patreon soon.

As The Ravenglass Throne wraps up, I’m starting to think about what comes next.

Possible projects include:

  • Guild of Assassins, book 4
  • Dawn of Assassins, book 4
  • Ravenglass Legneds, book 4
  • Scoundrels (A Dawn of Assassins prequel).
  • A follow-up to Wyvern Rider.

I’ll see where my energy takes me once The Ravenglass Throne is complete.

Outside of writing, I really enjoyed Season 2 of The Diplomat on Netflix—it’s packed with tension and sharp dialogue.

I also have some thoughts on WWE’s Royal Rumble, which was as chaotic and entertaining as ever!

🏰 Progress on The Ravenglass Throne & Launching The Knight and the Rebel | Author Diary – January 24, 2025 📚✨

This week, I’ve made significant progress on The Ravenglass Throne series—I’m halfway through drafting Book 8, and the story is shaping up to be an intense and exciting continuation of the series.

I’m also thrilled to announce the launch of The Knight and the Rebel (Ravenglass Legends, Book 3). This new release is now available, and I can’t wait for readers to dive into this thrilling tale set in the Ravenglass Universe.
